Differences and Uses of Lithium Cells

26. Jan 2022
Product information

Cylindrical, Pouch and Prismatic cells are the three most common formats of lithium cells.

Cylindrical cells have a robust case and the option of changing the chemistry, whereby the container mechanism remains the same. However, the individual cells have a low capacity and are soldered together in series in parallel, which means that it is not possible to replace individual cells. In addition, the parallel connection often leads to an impairment oft he security of the entire pack.

Pouch cells differ in dimensions depending on the manufacturer. Advantages of those cells are: high energy density and low-cost casing. Disadvantages are the fragile cases, the medium-low capacity as well as the difficult production of custom models.

Because of its robustness, the case oft he prismatic cell is used for special customer wishes. The high capacity of the individual elements also maximizes the security of the entire lithium pack. In addition, the screwable pole terminals make it easier to replace individual elements. A disadvantage is the lower energy density due to the type of construction.

Flash Battery has made use of the advantages oft he prismatic cells and is now using them in both industrial machines and electric vehicles.
